9. The Seven Gates of Hell
HELLAM TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA
Oh yeah the good old USA and I’m not surprised it’s Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania and Connecticut have some of at least the most haunted history, so having a gate to hell is not at all surprising. This town is at first blush an all American quiet and friendly town full of good hard working people; an unlikely place for a gate to hell. But, the forests of this town and state could be considered the best space to have a hidden realm play out.
Again in the US, like New Orleans we see a tie to 7 gates. These stories were contradicted a lot as time wore on and people played Post Office with it. One of the urban legends ties it to an insane asylum on the far outskirts of town. This was a terrible place where the residents were beaten to death for escaping. But the urban legend that has its roots in the forest is the most interesting. Supposedly, a doctor that lived in the town was deemed a Satanist by the towns people built 7 gates on his land that went quite deep into the forest. It was said that anyone who passes the gates would be automatically taken to the underworld. The cool thing is you can only see the first gate in daylight. You’ll find it at the end of Hellum’s Trout Run Road.
Now, that’s one hell of a security system wouldn’t you say?
10. Cave of the Sibyl
NAPLES, ITALY
Sybil, being synonymous with the crazy is already an interesting part of this. Naples Italy is where you can find this weirdly shaped cave-like place. This baby is the oldest of those I’ve listed thus far. It was known to the ancient Romans in fact, Virgil in The Aeneid described the cave. He was convinced that it led so deep that there was no way not to enter the underworld itself. Syble was an integral part of his masterpiece that included the cave. She was an oracle and she sung prophecies throughout the caves. She served Aeneas at age 700! It is now included in the cumae Archaeological site but tourists can visit the caves.
